The Woman King : In the latest teaser for “The Woman King,” Gina Prince-sequel Bythewood’s to the box office sensation “The Old Guard,” Viola Davis is heard saying, “Some things are worth fighting for.” The movie, which was based on actual events, depicts the tale of the Agojie, an all-female military corps entrusted with defending the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s. Davis takes on the role of General Nanisca, who is in charge of indoctrinating new recruits and getting them ready for a titanic conflict.

According to Nanisca, “Europeans want to subjugate us. They won’t give up until they control all of Africa. We must respond in defence of our people. We fear no one, and we dread no pain, she declares her soldiers, adding, “I give you a choice: fight or we die.”

Davis has been nominated for an Oscar four times, most recently for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” She received an award in 2017 for her supporting performance in “Fences.” The last time Davis appeared on television, it was in the drama “The First Lady” on Showtime.

Other works by Prince-Bythewood include “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Love & Basketball.”

The movie “The Woman King,” written by Prince-Bythewood and Dana Stevens (“Life or Something Like It”), debuts in cinemas on September 16.
